Gus & Miles, Break it Down, Thursdays

02Apr09

Well well well, if you’re sick of hearing about the GFC then you’re in good company! The show tonight, streamed simulcast to the G20 summit in sunny London, England went about destroying any pretenses that there was any remaining problems in the current economic environment. So fear not! Wake up bright and early tomorrow morning and grab those credit cards, a trip to Westfield Marion Confessions of a Shopperholic-style is in order!

Miles and I took that task upon ourselves, and delivered a ripper set of both old and new masterful pieces of musical expression. We opened the show with the blistering

‘Paint a Vulgar Picture’ by The Smiths, off their Strangeways, here we come album (1986),

then launched into a healthy dose of local brilliance with ‘The Takeback’ by Zeta (born and bred here in Adelaide, http://www.myspace.com/zetaleague), and thumped on forward with a track by

Kanvas Grey (from Melbourne), ‘Heart Attack’, available at www.kanvasgrey.com

If you thought the GFC had any chance of hanging around, like the weird uncle who always leaves late on Christmas day, then you’re surely mistaken. We also played

‘Jimi Thing’, by Dave Matthews Band off their Under the Table and Dreaming album of 1994, and financial risk analysts and political pundits were sent scurrying!

The show was interspersed with live calls from none other than US President Barack Obama

i tune in to Gus & Miles on Break it Down, 101.5 fm, streamed live to Air Force One

, Italian charmer Silvio Berlusconi

ill leave this one to you, boys

"i'll leave this one to you, boys"

, and the darling of Central European political intrigue the lovely Angela Merkel

in this current economic climate we absolutely MUST heed any suggestions Gus & Miles may or may not have for the world economy

who were all keen on hearing our input on just how we should end all this financial madness.

Perhaps most amazingly was that Miles and I were able to play some long-unheard audio from an old 5UV production known as The Listening Hour, with Patrick O’Doolahan, a late-night talkback show that ran from the mid-80s right on through till Patrick’s retirement from radio in 2000. If possible we’ll be bringing you more of his archival pieces, including some beautiful but also confronting poetry he composed at one of the many ‘Poetica’ festivals he held at the station in the early 90s.

where am i?

"where am i?"

The rest of the show included tracks by The Shins (‘Split Needles’, from Wincing the Night Away, 2007) http://www.myspace.com/theshins ; Gomez with ‘Do One’ from Split the Difference (2004) who have a new album out, and went out with a

BANG with a track by US legends Boston (‘More than a Feeling’), available at good record stores and Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80’s games worldwide.

Stay tuned to the Gus & Miles show , and Break it Down, Tues-Wed-Thurs on your favourite station, Radio Adelaide 101.5fm.
